Optimise for exit
Before committing, ask how you would migrate away. If the answer is unclear, the cost of being wrong is far higher than the licence fee — and that cost arrives at the worst possible moment.
Own your data, rent your features
Keep customer records, financial history and operational data in systems you control. Rent the interfaces and capabilities around them, and treat those as replaceable by design.
Buy the commodity, build the edge
Nobody wins by building their own email or payroll. Build only where your process is genuinely different from everyone else's, and buy everything that isn't.
